Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi on Saturday met with the UN Secretary-Generals special envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed. During the meeting, the two discussed topics related to peace prospects and available or possible opportunities, reported a Yemeni official news agency. The Yemeni president reiterated his administration’s support for peace based on the three reference frames: the Gulf initiative, the outcomes of the comprehensive National Dialogue and the relevant UN resolutions, most important of which is resolution 2216. Hadi pointed out that putschists do not take into consideration the suffering of Yemeni people— they rather exploit it as much as possible to continue their war and recruitment of children, using them as cannon fodder, all of which is being dedicated solely to the implementation of personal agendas and rising sectarianism. For his part, UN envoy Ahmed supported efforts exerted by the international community to achieve peace. The UN envoy also pointed out to a number proposals available as a foundation for future peace initiatives, in hopes of preserving the peace process and further dialogue, with the latest being Kuwait-based consultations. On the other hand, two reports issued by a Yemeni human rights organization on Saturday documented 2,304 cases of civilian kidnappings carried out by Houthi militias, all of which took place between October 2014 and the end of May 2017. According to reports, the kidnappings were accompanied by 490 house and shop raids, 816 cases of confiscation of property, and the bombing of 95 houses. The reports indicated that 692 cases of arbitrary arrests were carried out against 313 government employees, 265 students, 559 young activists, 987 politicians opposing the coup movement, as well as 75 arrests of children and women. The two reports revealed that 329 prisoners were killed, and others abducted were used by coup militias as human shields.
