Special Deterrence Force (Rada) spokesman Ahmad Ben Salim has said that Hashem Abedi, the brother of the bomber who killed 22 people in the British city of Manchester in May, is being investigated in jail. Ben Salim said that Rada, which is deployed in the Libyan capital Tripoli, would not extradite Hashem. The spokesman told Asharq Al-Awsat that Abedi is a Libyan citizen and will be taken to trial in accordance with the country’s laws. “There are no agreements between Rada and the British government over the extradition of (Libyan) citizens,” he said. Salman Abedi, a 22-year-old Briton born to Libyan parents, blew himself up at the end of a show by US singer Ariana Grande in May. More than 500 people were injured. On Wednesday, British police said they had issued an arrest warrant for his brother Hashem for murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to cause an explosion, and prosecutors had asked Libya to extradite him. Briefing journalists, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) assistant chief constable Russ Jackson confirmed an extradition request for Hashem had been made. “Hashem Abedi is currently detained in Libya and the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) has now requested that Libyan authorities consider his extradition back to the United Kingdom,” Jackson said. “We are grateful for the Libyan authorities considering this request,” he added. Hashem was arrested in Libya a few days after the Manchester attack.
