Emir of Kuwait Shiekh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah received on Tuesday Sheikh Jassem bin Hamad Al Thani, the personal representative of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The two sides discussed the close fraternal ties between their two countries and ways to develop them, reported the Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA). They tackled the latest developments in the region. Kuwait has been playing the role of mediator in the crisis that erupted in June when Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain announced a diplomatic and economic boycott of Doha over its backing and financing of terrorism. Efforts have so far failed in bridging the gap between the four boycotting countries and Qatar. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had met in Washington on Monday with Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, who was on an official visit to the US. A statement from the Qatar Foreign Ministry said that the meeting tackled bilateral ties and ways to bolster and develop them in all fields. The two officials also discussed the latest regional developments. The Qatari minister informed Tillerson of the latest developments in the Gulf crisis and efforts of the Kuwait mediation. He voiced Doha’s commitment to launch dialogue to resolve the crisis “as soon as possible.” Moreover, he stressed the need to “ease the tensions in the region” because it “cannot tolerate more crises.” Al Thani had also met in Washington with Jason Greenblatt, US President Donald Trump’s envoy and special representative for international negotiations.
