Resigned Prime Minister Saad Hariri thanked Egypt for its support to Lebanon’s stability, noting that he would announce his position towards the current developments upon his return to Beirut. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi met on Tuesday with Hariri, with whom he discussed the situation in Lebanon, latest developments and bilateral relations. In remarks following the meeting, the resigned premier said: “I thank President Sisi for hosting me in Egypt and for the dinner he held, where we had a long talk that focused on Lebanon’s stability and the need for distancing ourselves from all regional policies.” “As I said in Paris, I will announce my political position in Lebanon… I will not talk now about politics,” he added. Also on Tuesday, Sisi received a phone call from Lebanese President Michel Aoun. Ambassador Bassam Radi, Spokesman for the Presidency, said that the discussion touched on the means of enhancing bilateral relations and the strong ties between the two countries. The two leaders also reviewed latest developments in Lebanon and the importance to preserve stability and to prioritize national interests. In Beirut, sources told Asharq al-Awsat said that Hariri’s resignation would not take effect until Aoun meets with the premier and discuss the reason behind the latter’s move. “All [political] parties have expressed their wish that Hariri remains in office, a demand that is also sought by the President; but if he fails to do so, we will start to study the next steps to be taken,” the sources said. Under Lebanons constitution, the president is bound to accept a premiers resignation however it is tendered, Lebanese constitutional expert Edmond Rizk told AFP. Although it is not outlined in the constitution, Rizk said, custom dictates “this resignation is supposed to be submitted to the president of the republic.”
