Lawyer Antoine Abu Dib called on the Arab League to intervene in the case of Lebanese citizen detained in Iran, Nizar Zakka, stressing that the concerned authorities in Lebanon have failed to take any action to seek his release. In a letter sent earlier this week, Abu Dib said that in 2015 the Lebanese citizen was on his way to the airport in Iran when he was kidnapped by people wearing civilian clothes. “It was later revealed that these people were members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC),” he said. At that time, Zakka was responding to an official invitation from the Iranian Vice-President to take part in a lecture on awareness of the United Nations goals on sustainable development. The man is detained in an Iranian prison to date. His lawyer stressed that the competent ministries and the Lebanese security services have not issued any official statement, “even to condemn what happened to the Lebanese citizen.” “They did not take any step that would free him, except for Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who raised the issue during meetings with official Iranian visitors.” Zakka is the Secretary General of the Arab Organization for Information and Communication (IJMA3), which includes organizations from all Arab countries, and works on the development of information and the elimination of the digital divide. Abu Dib said that what happened with Zakka was unprecedented in our modern history. “Abductions and hostage-taking are actions described as criminal or terrorist acts. Nizar Zakka is still a hostage in Iran and his health is deteriorating day after day,” the letter wrote. Abu Dib said Zakka did not resort earlier to the Arab League because “he had some hope that the Lebanese state would assume its responsibilities towards its citizens, but it did not.” Urging the Arab League to work on the liberation of Zakka, Abu Dib underlined the importance of raising his case before the competent international authorities, mainly the United Nations and its Human Rights Commission and the Security Council, and to take necessary measures against Iran.
