The readers of TIME magazine have chosen Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, as the Person of the Year for 2017. TIME announced the results of the online poll on Monday with the Prince garnering 24 percent of the vote. He was the only Arab figure in the world’s most important year-end survey. The list included 33 figures, including celebrities and politicians from all over the world. They included US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Second place in the toll went to the #MeToo hashtag documenting sexual assault victims with 6 percent of the vote. Third place went to the Dreamers campaign related to the undocumented immigrants residing in the US, with 5 percent of the votes. TIME has been choosing its year-end Person of the Year since 1927. The distinction usually goes to the person or persons with the most influence in the world during the past 12 months. The honor went to Trump in 2016 after his election as president of the US. Merkel was Person of the Year in 2015.
