The Lebanese government held a much-anticipated session on Tuesday, the first since Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his shock resignation last month. Speaking to reporters after the cabinet session, Hariri said: “The government and all of its members will disassociate themselves from all conflicts and wars.” The renewal of its commitment to the policy of disassociation aims at preserving Lebanon’s ties with Arab countries, stressed the premier. The cabinet also reiterated its commitment to the Taef Accord, he said, while stressing an article that underlines Lebanon’s Arab identity. “Lebanon will continue to bolster its ties with fraternal countries,” added Hariri. Regarding his resignation, he told reporters that President Michel Aoun had thanked him during the cabinet session for suspending his decision pending consultations. Hariri had announced that he was stepping down in protest against Iran’s meddling in internal Lebanese affairs and Iran-backed “Hezbollah’s” interference in regional conflicts in violation of the policy of disassociation. The Prime Minister suspended his resignation on November 22, following talks with the president. The policy of disassociation was approved by Lebanese political powers in 2012 in wake of the eruption of the Syrian conflict.
