The extraordinary Islamic Summit held in Istanbul on Wednesday called on the world to recognize the state of Palestine with the occupied East Jerusalem as its capital. Kings and heads of state and government of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) member states rejected and condemned the US statement on the status of Jerusalem, declaring it null and void in terms of conscience, justice and history like Israels decision to annex Jerusalem, its measures and procedures there, which have never been and will not be acceptable. Turkey had invited leaders of the OIC, including more than 50 Muslim countries, to meet in Istanbul and formulate a joint response to US President Donald Trumps decision that recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. A final communiqué released by the participants said that the US should withdraw from the peace process. Participants also declared their determination to cooperate and coordinate in order to support the cause of Palestine and Jerusalem at international forums, especially the United Nations. The summit called on the Trump administration to revoke its illegal decision, which would cause chaos in the region. The participants also stressed the importance of protecting the multicultural and religious character of Jerusalem. The communiqué called on supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which provides essential services to Palestinian refugees for their survival since 1949. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that Palestinians would go to the Security Council to seek full UN membership following Trump’s decision. Abbas praised the Arab and Muslim stands, particularly that of Saudi Arabia, saying The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman had told him: “There will be no peace deal without a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.” For his part, Jordans King Abdullah II warned that the recognition of Jerusalem as Israels capital was a "dangerous and destabilizing decision.” During a joint press conference with Abbas and Secretary General of the OIC Yousef al-Othaimeen, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also called on world powers to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.
