European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini will visit Lebanon on Tuesday in a show of support to Prime Minister Saad Hariri and the country’s state institutions. Diplomatic sources in Brussels told Asharq Al-Awsat that her discussions will focus on the latest Lebanese and regional developments. They will also address EU support to Lebanon in wake of the current challenges and how to bolster cooperation in various fields, they revealed. Mogherini had in November met in Brussels with Lebanese Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil. She stressed to him the EU’s complete support to Lebanon’s sovereignty and unity of its territory. She had declared at the end of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in November that the Union does not want any foreign meddling in Lebanon. It is essential to prevent regional conflicts and tensions from spilling over into Lebanon, she stressed. EU Commissioner on European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn had paid a visit to Lebanon in spring earlier this year in order to stress the Union’s strong support for the country’s democratic process, as well as its economic and social development. He hailed the measures Lebanon has taken to support Syrian refugees since the beginning of the crisis in the neighboring country.
