New Zealand singer Lorde canceled a planned show in Israel after facing pressure from supporters to boycott the country. According to AFP, the 21-year-old announced last week a Tel Aviv performance in June as part of a tour. After receiving criticism from international and New Zealand activists, Lorde announced on Sunday that she was canceling the performance. Lorde wrote in a statement distributed by the Israeli promoters of her Tel Aviv show: “Ive received an overwhelming number of messages, and letters and have had a lot of discussions with people holding many views, and I think the right decision at this time is to cancel the show.” "Im not too proud to admit I didnt make the right call on this one," she said of the initial decision to perform in Israel. "Im truly sorry to reverse my commitment to come play for you. I hope one day we can all dance." In a statement to AFP, the Israeli promoting company said: "We forgive Lorde and wish her a successful tour in Russia and the US." The movement behind the pressure on Lorde is known as Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions - BDS and says it is inspired by the campaign that targeted South Africas apartheid regime and is seeking an end to Israels occupation of the West Bank. Over the past years, BDS has been supported by many eminent figures like Pink Floyds Roger Waters. Israel sees BDS as a strategic threat and accuses it of anti-Semitism; a claim activists firmly deny, calling it an attempt to discredit them. The results of the Israels cultural boycott campaign have so far been contrasted. Artists such as Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana and Lauryn Hill refused to perform in Tel Aviv, however, others such as Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Bon Jovi have staged shows in recent years.
