Leaked reports issued by Iraq’s defense and interior ministers revealed on Tuesday that orders were issued to arrest high-ranking officials from both ministries in addition to the current commanding officer of the Air Force. The order are part of the anti-corruption campaign launched by Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, who said it would be his “next battle” after defeating ISIS in the country. Alia Nassif, an MP from the State of the Law bloc, confirmed on Tuesday that an arrest warrant was already issued against the high-ranking officials involved in corruption cases. “Orders were issued two weeks ago to arrest Lieutenant General Anwar Hama Amin, the commanding officer of the Iraqi Air Force, accused of wasting public money in questionable arms deals. Another order was issued to arrest former Defense Minister Khaled al-Obeidi,” Nassif told Asharq Al-Awsat. Separately, détente signs appeared on Tuesday in the crisis between Baghdad and Irbil after Iraq’s Interior Minister Qasim al-Araji received a delegation from the Kurdistan Region. The visit is considered the first of a Kurdish delegation to Iraq since the Kurdistan Region held its referendum on independence last September 25. Iraqi Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan told Asharq Al-Awsat that “both sides held a consultative and coordination meeting to discuss joint work and means to implement the content of the Constitution.” Maan also uncovered that “the Iraqi Interior Minister will make an expected visit to the Kurdistan Region.” For her part, member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan MP Rankin Abdullah told Ashrarq Al-Awsat that “such visits help produce positive progresses towards calming the situation and breaking the deadlock between both sides.” She said that discussing technical and administrative issues would pave the way for a serious political dialogue between Baghdad and Irbil because such talks would be built on “well-founded grounds.”
