The foreign minister of the Philippines denied on Tuesday that his country was planning on moving its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Minister ‎Alan Peter Cayetano said that Israel never made such a request to the Philippine government. “We clearly informed all of our friends in the Middle East that no discussion” over this issue was made, he continued. He instead stressed that Manila supports the two-state solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, saying that it wishes to play a role of peacemaker. “We support a peaceful settlement to the conflict,” he remarked. Israeli media reported that ten countries, including the Philippines, Romania and South Sudan, were studying the possibility of moving their embassies to Jerusalem. The Philippines was one of 35 countries that abstained last week from voting on a non-binding United Nations General Assembly resolution that rejected US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
