Libyan parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh welcomed on Saturday the Russian role in achieving reconciliation in the country. He told Russia’s Sputnik news agency that Moscow is offering its expertise in building a national Libyan army as part of efforts to reach the reconciliation. Moscow’s support for Tripoli stems from historic ties between the two sides, he explained. The speaker said that he had visited Russia and officials there were understanding of the developments in Libya. “Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was among the first backers of the need to amend the political agreement,” revealed Saleh. “Russia has supported the legitimate forces, the parliament in particular,” he added. He also welcomed the support offered by the United Nations Security Council and international community to the legitimate forces in Libya “despite our wariness of foreign intervention.” “Foreign meddling could veer matters off the course that benefits the Libyan people,” he explained.
