Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stressed on Saturday that the two-state solution was the only possible one for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He stressed that Ankara was prepared to mediate between the Palestinians and Israelis to reach peace. He made his remarks on the sidelines of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Paris where he held talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. Cavusoglu revealed that he had contacted his US counterpart Rex Tillerson to address President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, as well as the latest developments in Iran. The Turkish official said that his country’s ties with Israel will continue, despite the tensions over the Palestinian file. He stressed that Turkey was not anti-semetic and this can be asserted by Jews living in Turkey and Israelis visiting the country. “They can testify that Ankara is not anti-semetic,” said Cavusoglu. Erdogan had threatened to sever ties with Israel if Trump ratified his decision on Jerusalem. Turkish-Israeli ties had improved in June 2016, six years after diplomatic tensions sparked by the Mavi Marmara flotilla incident. The flotilla was headed to Gaza to break the Israeli siege, but was raided by Israeli forces, which led to international outcry and a deterioration of ties with Ankara.
