Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Dr. Mostafa El Feki announced launching a new program dealing directly with extremism, in an effort to eradicate it from Egypt. Feki, 73, stressed the importance of putting an end to bloodshed which brought about untold suffering for Egypt in recent years. "The new program has three levels, the first level, which encompasses schoolchildren in cities and villages, where a program was established to instill their artistic and literary creativity with the development of their skills and education,” he said. This phase will be launched by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) with the involvement of Egypt’s Cairo-based cultural institution, Bayt Al Sinnari, and work its way into upper Egypt and coastal cities and villages. “On the second level, the anti-extremism and counter-terrorism part of the program will focus specifically on Egyptian university students,” explained Feki. “Bibliotheca Alexandrina affiliate centers- which amount to 20- were directed to design an academic program for university youth involving culture and covering fields of pharaonic history, Coptic culture and contemporary Egyptian culture-- with emphasis on developing their creative skills.” “The third level of the new program is for young people, as open programs with Egypts public libraries, information centers and cultural palaces are being held inside cities to empower principals of cultural and scientific conversation with young people and to build national awareness.” Feki said that the programs are a contemporary way to answer young peoples questions about pressing cultural and ideological issues, so as not to leave gaps which extremist groups and radical ideology can exploit in recruiting young people. On the other hand, the BA’s Narrative Review workshop in Bayt Al Sinnari is organizing a seminar to discuss the controversial novel "Suraht Al-Aafa" by the young novelist Mustafa Al-Shaimi. “Narrative Review” is a series of literary workshops held every Tuesday at the BA. These workshops seek to nurture the writing skills of young Alexandrian authors, build networks between writers from different generations, and launch an active critical movement that will build bridges between critics in Alexandria, Egypt, and the Arab world at large. They also aim to connect with the latest international narrative works and establish a translation movement for the aforementioned critical movement. It is being discussed by critics Dr. Sayed Daifallah and Dr. Shaukat Al Masri. The seminar will be moderated by lecturer Moneer Oteybah, Supervisor of the librarys narrative review workshop and coordination, along with the participation of writer Hossam Eddin Farouk Abdel Hadi. It is noteworthy that the novelist Mustafa Al-Shaimi, born in the center of Nag Hammadi, Qena Governorate (about 80 kilometers north-west of Luxor) in 1989, has a bachelor degree in media and journalism. He has published several novels and story collections and had won local and international awards. He also received a scholarship from the culture ministry grant in 2017. The Egyptian Culture Ministry had announced giving out "freeing-time grants” for (2017-2018) projects. Since its establishment in 1959, the grants aim is to enrich the cultural movement by giving distinguished creators a monthly financial grant so that they can devote themselves to creativity away from physical and social obstacles.
