US President Donald Trump stressed on Monday his support for the Gulf Cooperation Council and confronting any regional threats. He stressed in a telephone call with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani the need to confront Iranian meddling in the region, as well as fighting terrorism. He noted that Doha had signed signed in mid-2017 a Memorandum of Understanding with Washington on counter-terrorism. Sheikh Tamim had held talks in Ankara on Monday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This marks his second trip to Turkey in one month and the third in two months. Discussions between the two leaders will tackle bilateral ties and a number of regional issues, reported the Anadolu news agency. Sheikh Tamim had paid a visit to Turkey on December 13 to attend the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit that was hosted by Istanbul. Doha has continued to bolster its ties with Ankara in wake of last year’s diplomatic and economic boycott against it by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt over its support for terrorism. Qatar will host this week the Expo Turkey, one of the most important projects that are aimed at cementing economic and trade ties with Ankara. The second edition of the expo will be held between January 17 and 19.
