The damage caused by protesters amounted to 20 billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately 1.9 billion euros), in addition to the injury of 902 security forces during the confrontations, a state lawyer in the trial of those arrested during northern Morocco demonstrations said . State Lawyer Mohamed Husseini Kirot presented these figures to the Court of Appeal in Casablanca during the trial of 54 accused on various charges, some of which are minor, others serious, such as "compromising internal security." At least 604 policemen, 178 support troops and 120 gendarmes were wounded during protests, said Kirot. The countryside, especially the city of Al Hoceima, has for several months witnessed protests against "marginalization" after finding the dead body of a young fisherman in a garbage collection vehicle. The protests, which were mostly peaceful, saw clashes between security forces and protesters. According to Amnesty Internationals latest release, "hundreds of demonstrators" have been arrested and "at least 410 are currently in detention." The organization demanded the release of those arrested for practicing their right to speak truth to power.
