US President Donald Trump stressed Wednesday the importance of a united Gulf Cooperation Council that is focused on countering regional threats. He expressed support for the mediation efforts by the Emir of Kuwait to resolve the Gulf crisis. In a phone call with Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, Trump expressed his appreciation for the Emir’s leadership role in promoting unity in the Gulf region. He also congratulated him on Kuwait’s new seat on the United Nations Security Council among the non-permanent members of the 15-member council. Kuwait is due to assume the rotating presidency of the council in February. A White House statement said that the Emir briefed the President on the latest developments in the Gulf dispute, and both leaders reaffirmed the importance of a united Gulf Cooperation Council that is focused on countering regional threats. “The leaders also discussed areas in which the United States and Kuwait can increase cooperation on important security and economic issues to benefit both countries,” the statement added. The Gulf crisis was the subject of talks between the US president and the Emir of Kuwait on September 7, when Trump confirmed his support for the mediation efforts of Sheikh Sabah, expressing his willingness to intervene and participate in resolving the crisis. "If I can help mediate between Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia in particular, I will be ready to do so, and I think you will have a very quick agreement," Trump told a joint press conference with Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad.
