Ten Syrian refugees froze to death in the northeastern Lebanese border region of Arsal due to the cold weather conditions. The refugees were attempting to illegally enter Lebanon, which has been hit by a snowstorm in recent days. The Lebanese army managed to rescue six other Syrians. The military said in a statement on Friday that it had dispatched forces to the mountainous region after it received reports that refugees were stranded in the snow on the outskirts of the al-Sweiri-al-Masnaa region while trying to illegally enter the country. A patrol was sent to inspect the area and it discovered nine Syrians, who had frozen to death. A tenth later succumbed to the cold despite being transferred to hospital. Six refugees were saved by the army. Two others were arrested due to their involvement in smuggling, said the military statement. The army is still searching for other refugees, who are stuck in the snow.
