The Saudi defense air forces intercepted on Saturday a ballistic missile that was fired by the Iran-backed Houthi militias towards the Kingdom, announced the coalition to restore legitimacy in Yemen, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). Spokesman for the coalition, Turki al-Maliki said that the missile was directed towards the city of Najran and deliberately targeting civilians and populated areas. Fired from Yemen’s Saada province at 12:38 pm, the rocket was intercepted by the air forces before it could reach its target, he added. This hostile act proves the Iranian regime’s ongoing support of the armed Houthi group and its armament with substantial capabilities in defiance of United Nations resolutions, he declared. It is aimed at threatening the security of Saudi Arabia, as well as regional and international security. The firing of ballistic missiles against populated cities and villages is a violation of International Humanitarian Law, stressed Maliki according to SPA. He therefore called on the international community to take more serious and effective measures to halt blatant Iranian violations and its ongoing smuggling of arms and missiles to terrorists groups. They should be held accountable for their actions and their defiance of international values and norms, he demanded.
