Egyptian prison authorities have executed an Egyptian man on charges of killing an Egyptian army officer in the Ismailia province in 2013. A military court sentenced Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Abu Sarie to death after his conviction of killing 35-year-old Armed Forces officer Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Farouq Mandour. Abu Sarie was accused of shooting Colonel Ahmed with an automatic weapon, according to Egyptian newspapers. The execution took place in a Cairo prison, after the Military Court in Ismailia approved the death sentence, adding that the defendant was a member of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group. Early this year, four other men, who were accused by a military court of killing three military students in a bombing in 2015, were hanged, in what is known as the Kafr al-Sheikh Stadium case. In another development, official Spokesperson of the Armed Forces Tamer al-Refai said Tuesday that the Second Field Army’s law enforcement forces in North Sinai have launched several anti-terror operations. “Military forces killed two terrorists and arrested another two while they were going to carry out terrorist operations against the armed forces,” Refai said. “Several suspected militants were arrested and investigated by authorities.” The military forces further discovered and destroyed several hideouts, which the militants have been using to hide in and watch the forces,” Refai added. Meanwhile, a four-wheel drive car was destroyed and six bombs were detonated as they were prepared to target the forces on the main roads. A 10-meter deep tunnel was destroyed in North Sinai, containing motor and electric cables. Refai added that the military forces also seized a vehicle containing large amounts of substances used for making explosive devices, in addition to three cars containing quantities of drugs.
