Egypt’s Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani announced on Thursday the successful placement of the ancient colossus of famed pharaoh Ramses II at the entrance of a new under construction museum. The colossus, which dates back some 3,300 years, will be on display at the entrance of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which will house some of Egypts most unique and precious ancient artifacts, including some belonging to famed boy King Tutankhamun. The partial opening of the museum, located near the ancient pyramids outside of Cairo, will take place at the end of 2018. The placement of the colossus, which weighs over 80 tons and is some 12 meters (13 yards) high, occurred amid a great deal of fanfare and in the presence of Western and Egyptian officials. Military music accompanied the colossus’ convoy in central Cairo as it made its way to its final destination at the museum. The process, which took about an hour, cost 13.6 million Egyptian pounds. Another 87 artifacts will be placed at the museums entrance, said Anani.
