Ten new members for the Peace and Security Council in the African Union (AU) will be elected on Friday for a two-year period, given that the term of former members comes to an end on Jan 31. The other five remaining members will be elected in 2019 for a three period term. Each candidate should garner one third of the African Union’s executive council votes. Notably, one seat was dedicated to North Africa, three seats to West Africa, two seats for the east and two as well for Central Africa. Activities of 32nd ordinary session of the AU commenced on Thursday in participation of foreign ministries of the African Union’s member states. This comes as a preparation for the 30th summit of AU on Jan 28-29. Until Thursday evening, Morocco was the only candidate for North Africa, after the withdrawal of Algeria. Rumors circulate that Algeria is getting ready to the permanent membership, knowing that the Peace and Security Council in the African Union is chaired by the Algerian Ismail Chergui. AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat on Thursday, during the opening session of the AUs 32nd Executive Councils meeting, called on member states to take strict decisions regarding institutional reforms of the union. It seems that Rwandan President Paul Kagame will come after President of Guinea Conakry Alpha Conde as a chairman of the union, and observers expect that reforms will be launched during his term. The 30th summit will be under the slogan of “Winning the fight against corruption: a sustainable path to Africa’s transformation”. Faki Mahamat commented on the topic of 2018, considering that choosing this topic was absolute because corruption has aggravated in the continent causing devastating consequences on the economic development, social coherence and political stability.
