The Yemeni Congregation for Reform, or Islah party, distanced itself from activist Tawakkol Karman after she made a series of tweets criticizing the Arab Coalition to restore legitimacy in Yemen. Secretary General of the party Mohammed al-Yadumi told Asharq Al-Awsat: “This woman does not in any way represent the Islah party.” “The stances and sacrifices Saudi Arabia has made for Yemen are clear for all to see and they can only be denied by spiteful figures,” he added. Karman is the 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate, which she shared with former Liberia President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee. She has tweeted her criticism of the Saudi-led Coalition and taken a stance similar to the Houthi militias. The Houthis have rejoiced with the stances of Karman, who had previously been critical of the militants, whom she described as insurgents. Media personnel at the Masira station also voiced their support for her shift in position, saying in social media posts that “it was better late than never.” Yemenis critical of Karman’s new stances have demanded that she be stripped of her Nobel prize, while figures from the Taaz province have also distanced themselves from her.
