A new app has been developed to recreate the voice of anyone in the world and manipulate it to say whatever the user wants. Despite being only in the beta phase, this technology could reproduce an accurate digital version of US President Donald Trumps voice after hearing him speak for only 60 seconds. Lyrebird currently only works in English, performing best with American accents. According to the German news agency (dpa), its applications are myriad, from personalizing the voice of a digital assistant, to listening to audiobooks that seem as though Morgan Freeman is reading “Clifford the Big Red Dog” aloud. The company has thought about the more nefarious applications for Lyrebird technology. It promised to make users recorded voice data safe and to publicize the use of this technology in voice processing, so people can know that sound clips of public figures are fake. Lyrebird also says that it requires permission from the person whose voice is being recorded and has ways to tell if a sample is fake. The beta version is free to test at the moment. The creators say they plan to expand the technology, bringing it in other languages.
