Mahmoud al-Werfalli, a Libyan commander wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crimes charges, has expressed intention to hand himself in to the military police in Marj (east Libya), where the headquarters of the Libyan National Army is. In a video posted on Facebook, the commander announced “After instructions from the General Command and the Commander-in-Chief Khalifa Haftar about my arrest, I immediately received the instructions and I will hand myself over to the military police in Marj city to complete the ICC investigations with me.” Werfalli urged provokers to stop exploiting his case to undermine the national army and its commanders. This was the first appearance of Werfalli after a video that showed him shooting dead extremists last month at the scene of a deadly bomb attack in Benghazi. Haftar ensured that this file will be tackled according to the Libyan National Army military regulations – this was also confirmed by a high-rank Libyan official who reported to Asharq Al-Awsat. In another matter, the US Embassy in Tripoli expressed sorrow for preventing Tawergha residents from returning home, and threatening them. The embassy stressed that reconciliation efforts at the meantime are more important than any other time. U.N. Special Representative for Libya Ghassan Salameh announced, during an expanded meeting with representatives of southern Libya, that security conditions prevented him from visiting this region, yet he promised to hold similar meetings in the south once conditions are better. The meeting was broadcast live through various social media networks. As France renewed keenness to achieve stability in Libya, and anticipation for the success of the electoral process planned by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya end of this year, Sarraj met French Ambassador in Libya Brigitte Curmi and discussed the political and security condition in Libya, in addition to the economic forum to be sponsored by the French Embassy in Tripoli. Sarraj underpinned the importance of holding the presidential and parliamentarian elections on intact bases.
