Egyptian security forces killed 12 militants and arrested 92 in a continuing crackdown in the Sinai Peninsula, the army said in a statement on Monday. Egypts air force also destroyed 60 militant targets, the statement that was carried by State TV said. The crackdown is part of a campaign to crush insurgents blamed for a string of attacks. The army said Sunday it had killed 16 militants and detained 34 more in Sinai since the launching of Operation Sinai 2018 on Friday. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is seeking re-election in March, ordered the armed forces in November to defeat militants within three months. Egypts security forces, the army and civilians have been increasingly targeted by militants since 2013. Operation Sinai 2018, which involves the air force and navy, is also to target militants in the Nile Delta and Western Desert near the border with Libya.
