US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson renewed on Tuesday his country’s support for the efforts exerted by Kuwait Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber Al Sabah in resolving the Arab Gulf dispute. “Nearly six months have passed since the eruption of the dispute between the Gulf countries and the US believes that reconciliation is important for these nations and the region’s security,” he added. The official made his remarks during a joint press conference in Kuwait with his counterpart Sheikh Sabah al Khalid Al Sabah. Tillerson was in Kuwait to attend a ministerial meeting of the US-led coalition fighting the ISIS terrorist group. He also attended a meeting on the reconstruction of Iraq after the defeat of the ISIS terrorist group. Tillerson discussed Kuwait’s mediation in the Gulf crisis with Shiekh Sabah, whom he met on Tuesday. He stressed that Washington is keen on restoring Gulf unity. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt severed diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar in June 2017 over its support and financing of terrorist organizations. They accuse it of fueling tensions and creating instability in the region. For his part, the Kuwaiti FM highlighted last year’s Gulf-American summit that was hosted in the Saudi capital Riyadh, saying that it helped establish the Gulf as a strategic partner for the US. He did not reveal a date for the next time the two sides would meet, but sources said that the next summit may be held in the US in May. Riyadh hosted in May 2017 a landmark summit that brought together the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as US President Donald Trump. Tillerson is expected to continue his tour of the Middle East on Wednesday by heading to Jordan, where he is scheduled to meet with King Abdullah II and Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi. Talks will focus on reviving the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. They will also address the issue of Jerusalem in wake of Trump’s controversial decision in December to recognize the city as the capital of Israel. The Syrian crisis and war on terrorism are also on the agenda of the US official’s talks. Tillerson’s regional tour has taken him to Egypt and Kuwait. After Jordan, he is set to travel to Lebanon and later Turkey, the final stop of his trip.
