On the seventh anniversary of the revolution that overthrew Muammar Gaddafi regime in 2011, Libya is divided as the authorities in Tripoli prepare to celebrate the event ignored by the eastern region, where the army is preparing to enter Derna, the last stronghold of extremist groups. The High Committee for the celebrations declared that the Security Directorate of Tripoli closed the streets leading to As-Shuhada Square in the center of the capital as part of the security plan set to ensure the safety of citizens and commemorate the anniversary of February 17 revolution. On the eastern region, especially in Benghazi, there are no signs of celebration which ignores the occasion for the second consecutive year. Mitiga International Airport was forced to shut down on Tuesday for security reasons after a mortar shell fell near the watchtower. The airport was shut for four hours, an airport official told Asharq Al-Awsat on Wednesday. It was noteworthy that airports management issued two separate statements announcing flights were temporary stopped and later resumed without explaining the incident. This brings to mind similar recent clashes in the vicinity of the airport between armed militias, most of which are loyalists to the Government of National Accord headed by Fayez al-Sarraj. Libyas Supreme State Council issued a statement after a meeting held in Tripoli, in which the members expressed their strong condemnation and denunciation of the previous statements of the Speaker of Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh. Earlier, Saleh gave statements claiming there is a military coordination between Egypt and the forces of the National Army to liberate the city of Derna, last coastal city on the eastern region outside the control of the army. The Councils members criticized Salehs statements, saying they "call for Egypts military intervention in Libya and participate in entering into Derna," arguing that "this is a dangerous development" that requires GNA and United Nations to address these calls as a "blatant infringement of Libyas sovereignty". The members of the Council, headed by Abdulrahman al-Swehli, stressed that they will take necessary legal measures against some of the decisions of the House of Representatives, which were taken during the past period in violation of the provisions of Libyan political agreement and legislation. PM Sarraj discussed the situation in Derna during his governments first meeting of 2018. Earlier, on the sidelines of his visit to Cairo, Saleh indicated that military forces led by Field Marshal Hafter will soon release Derna in coordination with Egyptian authorities. The military operation that will be launched is also important to Egypt that doesnt want terrorist groups do not infiltrate into Egyptian territory especially with extremists in Derna. In other news, at least 22 people were killed on Wednesday and more than 79 injured when a truck transporting African migrants crashed south of the Libyan town of Bani Walid, most of which were Eritrean and Somali nationals. "Several victims are even being treated on the ground," said spokesman Salah al-Twijer. Bani Walid, on the edge of the desert 170 kilometers southeast of the capital Tripoli, is a transit point for migrants heading to the Mediterranean coast. They are often held and transported in brutal conditions, passed between smugglers who take payments for different stages of the journey and extort money from migrants. From northern Libya, many of the migrants attempt to cross to Italy in flimsy inflatable dinghies.
