A military helicopter carrying Mexicos interior minister and the governor of the southern state of Oaxaca crashed on Friday killing two people during a tour of damage from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, but the senior officials survived. Interior Minister Alfonso Navarete told TV network Televisa that he and Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat were not seriously harmed in the accident that happened as the helicopter was attempting to land. The ministry issued a statement on Twitter saying two people on the ground were killed when the helicopter came down. The officials were surveying the aftermath of the quake that rocked the rural state and Mexico City on Friday evening. The tremor did not directly cause fatalities, but damaged dozens of buildings and knocked out power for a million people, authorities said. Two days earlier, Mexican independent presidential candidate Maria de Jesus Patricio was injured in a road crash that also killed a person riding in her caravan and injured two others. The National Indigenous Council said in a brief statement that a vehicle carrying Patricio and 10 other people went off a highway in the state of Baja California Sur. The group said a woman it did not identify was killed and council member Francisco Grado was in serious condition. Patricio and council member Lucero Islava also had injuries, the statement said, but gave no details.
