Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir urged on Friday Qatar to cease financing terrorism and meddling in the affairs of regional countries. He said that the crisis with Qatar “was minor compared to important regional issues.” The minister made his comments before an international summit in Brussels that pledged some $500 million to boost counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel region in Africa. He also said that Iran was the “greatest and sole danger on the region and perhaps the world,” adding that the Tehran-backed militias have played a negative role in the area. Jubeir highlighted the challenges in the region, most notably in Syria and Iraq. “We are seeking to restore stability in Syria and back the Geneva path to reach a peaceful solution,” he continued. On Iraq, he said: “We have worked on bolstering ties with Baghdad in many fields.” “Iraq has an important role in the Arab world and we support reconstruction efforts there,” he stressed. Addressing Yemen, he said that the situation there was “complicated,” accusing the Iran-backed Houthis of hindering peace efforts on more than one occasion. Jubeir also expressed Saudi Arabia’s willingness to contribute to counter-terrorism efforts in Sahel. Donations to Sahel counter-terrorism so far have been led by Saudi Arabia with 100 million euros, while the United Arab Emirates has given 30 million euros and the US $60 million.
