The Special Deterrence Force (Rada), which is deployed in the Libyan capital Tripoli, has expressed readiness to hand over the brother of the bomber who killed 22 people in Manchester in May last year to the British police if requested by Libya’s public prosecutor. “The Libyan authorities in Tripoli are dealing with the case of Hashem Abedi. They have a say in it,” Rada spokesman Ahmad Ben Salim told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper. “If the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord approves to hand over the Libyan citizen (to the UK), then it will ask the general prosecutor” to do so, and “in our turn, we will execute the order,” Ben Salim said. British authorities have made several requests for the extradition of Abedi, the brother of Salman Abedi, a 22-year-old Briton born to Libyan parents, who blew himself up at the end of a show by US singer Ariana Grande in Manchester. British police have issued an arrest warrant for Hashem, 20, and prosecutors had asked Libya to extradite him. Rada arrested him days after the Manchester attack, . UK’s The Times newspaper recently said that the police investigation into the Manchester bombing had been seriously delayed by the Libyan authorities, who have still not reached a decision on Hashems extradition. The senior coroner for Manchester, Nigel Meadows, has adjourned inquests into the deaths of the 22 victims until the police investigation is complete. The inquests are scheduled for June but now look almost certain to be delayed again, the daily reported. By law, any inquest proceedings must be suspended pending criminal inquiries and a possible trial.
