Days before the second anniversary of the Brussels terrorist attacks, Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders stressed that his government has taken “all possible” measures to avert new assaults. He told Asharq Al-Awsat that it is difficult to say that there are no more dangers, but all appropriate steps have been taken in order to prevent any terrorist attacks. This will ensure the safety of the citizens throughout the country. The 2016 attacks at Brussels Airport in Zaventem, and at Maalbeek metro station in central Brussels left 32 people dead and 300 wounded. Addressing the possibility of ISIS fighters returning to Belgium after they fought in Syria and Iraq, Reynders revealed that the government was contacting its counterpart in Iraq and other concerned countries over the issue. He explained that Brussels is seeking to obtain the greatest amount of information and it will take the necessary steps in wake of what it collects. This information includes the identity of the fighters and their numbers. In later December, the Belgian government approved the return of the children of ISIS members. Their parents, however, were not welcome. According to the concerned authorities, some 70 to 80 children were born in Syria and Iraq to ISIS fighters. DNA tests will be performed on them to verify their identities. After returning to Belgium, they have the legal right to apply for the Belgian nationality. The nationality could be granted to them after the necessary legal measures. In October, the Belgian government announced that 20 people, including children under six years of age, had returned to the country from Syria and Iraq.
