Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir stressed on Friday that Iran must change its behavior and stop supporting terrorism in the region. "If Iran wants to have a role in the region, it must change its aggressive policies," he told reporters at the Saudi embassy in Washington on the sidelines of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to the US. "It must abandon the principle of exporting the revolution and abide by international laws and the principle of non-interference in the affairs of others." Commenting on recent remarks by Iranian FM Mohammed Javad Zarif that Tehran was ready to protect Saudi Arabia should it come under any attack, Jubeir stated: “His statements are often strange.” “The Kingdom does not need anyone to defend it,” he added. On Prince Mohammed’s US tour, he said that his talks with American administration officials tackled counter-terrorism efforts and regional developments. The meetings stressed the American-Saudi partnership and witnessed the signing of numerous cooperation agreements. After his four-day stop in Washington, Prince Mohammed will travel to Boston on Saturday and later New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston. He will meet with a number of financiers, investment bankers, industry and technology leaders, and officials in the entertainment field. In Houston, he will meet officials from the oil and petrochemicals fields. Jubeir told reporters that the Crown Prince’s talks also touched on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, revealing that these discussions have reached an “advanced” stage. Responding to a question by Asharq Al-Awsat on Saudi ties with Pakistan and Afghanistan, he said: “Riyadh has strong ties with both countries.” “Saudi Arabia enjoys ties with each of the US, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Kingdom has worked with them in counter-terrorism and other strategic files,” he explained. Commenting on the Gulf dispute with Qatar and its recent release of a terrorism list, Jubeir hoped that Doha will “realize that it has a problem that needs to be addressed.” "We have established a list of terrorist financiers and the US has also compiled a similar list, which includes Qatari individuals," he added. Qatar had initially rejected and denied the list compiled by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. "This latest Qatari action is a recognition by itself that it has a problem and it needs a solution." The Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain announced in June that they were boycotting Doha over its support and financing of terrorism. On Trump’s appointment of John Bolton as his new national security advisor, Jubeir said that his stance on Iran was “reasonable,” adding that Riyadh looks forward to cooperating with him in the future. Turning to Yemen, the minister said that Tehran has employed militias there. These militias have fired ballistic missiles towards Saudi Arabia. Iran must withdraw from Yemen and stop providing terrorist militias with missiles and abide by international resolutions, he demanded.
