“Losses in operational and productive sectors caused by Houthi coup militias amount to $27 billion dollars,” Yemeni Social Affairs and Labor Minister Ibtihaj al-Kamal said. Speaking on the occasion of Labor Day, Kamal said in a statement that “Houthi coup militias largely contributed to the destruction of Yemen’s national economy and the depreciation of its labor sector by a large percentage.” Kamal cited Houthi militiamen being responsible for looting state resources, single-handedly breaking up the country’s private sector, restricting the national economic and trade movement, chasing away prospect investors and making business and trade pricey. She also stressed that the government will do everything within its power to stimulate the labor sector. Kamal also announced that the internationally-recognized government headed by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi was in the process of preparing programs to operate the private sector’s recovery from strong fluxes caused by Houthi militias’ coup attempt. The Labor minister called on donor countries and organizations to support the Yemeni government in reactivating all sectors and improving the level of working class income in Yemen. She added that such a support will aid in creating new jobs and increase youth employment in all fields. Kamal pointed out that over 50% of the Yemeni people belong to the country’s workforce. Alongside economic demands, Kamal urged that international forces, states and organizations intervene to end coup militias’ infringement on state institutions. Kamal advocated for sponsor countries to help revamp the economic and commercial life in all Yemeni governorates. A result of the conflict in Yemen is that many government and civil institutions have been closed, as well as the suspension of salaries of employees living in Houthi-controlled areas. It is reported that some employees haven’t been paid in nearly two years.
