Moroccos Employment and Professional Integration Minister Mohamed Yatim said on Tuesday that cases of abuse and harassment facing Moroccan female workers in Spain, remain “very isolated cases and also apply to workers of different nationalities.” In a speech at a meeting of the Social Sector Committee of the Moroccan House of Representatives (the first chamber of parliament) to study the "status of workers in strawberry fields in Spain, Yatim said investigations by the Spanish authorities revealed 12 cases of attempted harassment by 7 perpetrators, where two are facing legal proceedings, while the others are still under investigation. Spain issues seasonal work permits for more than 10,000 Moroccan workers annually to pick strawberries in Spanish farms. Yatim stressed that the ministry has followed the process closely of employing agricultural workers to cover all the conditions for success. He stressed that the Ministry continues to monitor the development of the situation closely and will take all appropriate measures to improve and protect Moroccans. Many Moroccan women working in the Spanish city of Huelva said they have experienced sexual abuse, stirring outrage in the North African kingdom. Morocco and Spain have vowed to improve protection for Moroccan seasonal female workers in Spanish farms. This pledge was made during talks between Yatim and Spanish Ambassador to Morocco Ricardo Diez-Hochleitner Rodriguez, according to a statement by the Moroccan ministry on Tuesday. “Information gathered from the various sources and official parties shows that cases of harassment remain very isolated and that this type of abuse involves female agricultural workers of different nationalities,” the statement said.
