Egypt and the US held talks in Cairo on Thursday tackling efforts to revive negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians in addition to international initiatives aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement. The talks took place between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the vising Senior Advisor to the US President Jared Kushner, and Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt and the accompanying delegation. Egyptian presidential spokesperson Bassam Radi said that Kushner showcased the US administration’s efforts and current communications to push forward the negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, and to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Sisi affirmed the Egyptian support for international efforts and initiatives for a comprehensive and fair settlement to the conflict based on a two-state solution with the borders of 1967. The statement said that Sisi showcased the efforts exerted by Egypt to conclude the Palestinian reconciliation process. Radi added that Kushner confirmed during the meeting that Egypt represents a pillar for stability in the Middle East and that it has huge capabilities based on its historic role in this framework. The Egyptian president stressed Egypt’s keenness to reinforce and develop strategic ties with the US in a way that serves joint interests of both countries, amid the instability that the Middle East is suffering from. He also showcased Egypt’s efforts to combat and eradicate terrorism, in parallel with its quests to achieve social and economic development. In the same context, a statement issued by the White House on Thursday stated that Kushner convened with Sisi at a time when he continues to hold meetings in the Middle East regarding an anticipated plan for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
