The Iraqi parliament is seeking to extend its tenure that ends next Saturday by proposing a fourth amendment to the elections law. Lawmakers are expected to vote on a clause, which stipulates that the legislature should continue to function until the Federal Supreme Court ratifies the results of the May 12 elections. Parliament is scheduled to convene Thursday amid objections made by top figures on the legality of an extension despite claims by others that such a move is necessary to facilitate the legislative branchs role in monitoring the executive authority. First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Humam Hamoudi said Tuesday that extending the parliament’s term is a dangerous precedent and a clear violation of the constitution that would negatively impact the political situation. Hamoudi underpinned the significance of a vote recount to safeguard the democratic process and preserve the votes of electors in the country. Head of Islamic Virtue bloc Ammar Tohme said the parliament will likely fail to vote on the fourth amendment over lack of quorum. He told Asharq Al-Awsat that many deputies, who had voted in favor of the third amendment earlier this month, see no reason for extending the parliament’s tenure. Such a move is a “dangerous phenomenon that leads to dictatorship and tyranny,” said Tohme. Despite his claims, Kurdistan Islamic Group member Zana Saeed said the parliament will be able to carry out the amendment in Thursday’s session.
