Spanish divers have found a German World War II submarine near the coast of Galicia in Spain. The “U-966 Gut Holz” was heavily damaged by Allied bombers in November 1943 on the northwestern coast of Spain, said Spanish media. According to the German news agency, the submarine wreckage was found after years of searching at a depth of 24-26m. Seventy-five years ago, the submarine’s commander ordered to sink and blow up the badly damaged boat. The majority of the vessel’s crew, about 50, managed to escape and reach land, while eight others died. "A wave of explosions resulting from the successful bombing was felt. The crew members targeted the coast and swam towards it,” then sailors were kept in a detention camp in Spain, said the German report. Two grandchildren of the submarine’s Commander Eckehard Wolf and his daughter-in-law still live in the area, reported the Spanish newspaper La Voz de Galicia on Sunday.
