A recent research study published by the Italian Institute for International Policy Studies highlighted Saudi efforts in countering violent extremism. The report praised Saudi Arabias long experience in countering extremism and terrorist groups and tackled how governments throughout the Mediterranean and the Middle East respond to the surge of terrorism and extremism. Experts in this report explain the policies of variance, prevention and countering extremism adopted by countries in the MENA region. The report reveals emerging trends, lessons learned and provides an overview and recommendations on the current security situation. It also seeks to provide a deep analysis of policies and measures adopted to confront violent extremism in the various Mediterranean countries, highlighting the practices of the countries of North Africa and the Middle East that have been most affected by this phenomenon. The report, prepared by researchers based at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, included Dr. Abdullah Khalid Al Saud, Director of the Research Department and Head of the Security Studies Unit, Yousuf Zare, a researcher in the Security Studies Unit. Researchers went over the long history of confrontation with terrorist groups, citing instances of the Kingdoms efforts in this field kicking off before other countries. The report adds that Saudi Arabia has gained a high degree of expertise and knowledge in combating extremism and terrorism. The research also discusses programs and initiatives launched by Saudi Arabia aimed at rehabilitating extremists and combating extremism propaganda on the Internet. Saudi Arabia’s efforts have been recognized as pioneering where it comes to its rehabilitation program and its global-scale successes. More so, the United Nations praised the efforts of the Mohammed bin Nayef Center for Counseling and Care in a special report on the importance of treatment and rehabilitation of persons arrested on terror-linked charges.
