The Nidaa Tounes party renewed on Friday its demand for “the complete reshuffle of the cabinet” of Prime Minister Youssef Chahed. It made the demand soon after the end of a deadline for the cabinet to stand to a parliament vote of confidence. The party said that it was demanding the government change “in order to resolve the stifling political crisis the country is enduring.” The call revived hopes among many political and syndicate powers that Chahed’s government would be toppled and that a new one would be formed and lead the country towards presidential and parliamentary elections next year. Politicians and experts did not expect Chahed to respect the deadline given for his cabinet to stand before the parliament as he had repeatedly thrown the ball in his rivals’ court during previous parliament session. Parliament had met in late July to grant a vote of confidence to a new interior minister. The development will likely exert more pressure on Nidaa leaderships, who have been divided over the fate of the Chahed government. During its meeting on Friday, which was chaired by its head Beji Caid Essebsi, Nidaa Tounes called on its parliamentary blocs to submit an amendment to the main electoral and referendum law. This is aimed at revising the country’s electoral system, a move that is motivated by backing the amended presidential system at the expense of the current amended parliamentary system.
