JEDDAH: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has instructed food facilities to clearly display the ingredients and number of calories in food and beverages by Dec. 31. This will apply to all food facilities, including restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops, fresh fruit juice shops, bakeries, patisseries, supermarkets, recreation facilities, colleges, universities and government agencies. Legal procedures will be taken, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, against facilities that violate the new regulation. The SFDA and the ministry have organized workshops in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, launched awareness campaigns, and published a guide for restaurant and cafe owners on how to calculate calories, and how to reduce them in food and beverages. The SFDA is taking all measures to ensure the highest health and hygiene standards in food establishments across the Kingdom. Recently, it concluded a three-month drive during which 2,698 food establishments were inspected. During the drive, the authority halted the production lines in 75 factories due to violations. It also destroyed 778 tons of food not suitable for consumption, and 43,336 liters of water not suitable for drinking. The number of food storage establishments and food distribution centers that were inspected during this period has reached 1,789, during which SFDA inspectors seized 15.7 tons of violating food products.
