A member of the Lebanese Forces parliamentary bloc, the Strong Republic, warned on Tuesday some Lebanese parties from hindering the mission of PM-designate Saad Hariri in forming the new cabinet, saying there were pressing economic problems in the country. MP Fadi Saad told Asharq Al-Awsat that Lebanon needs to form a national unity government, ruling out the possibility of agreeing on a majoritarian cabinet. Late last month, caretaker Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil proposed the formation of a majoritarian government, a move aimed at targeting the parties that disagree with the Free Patriotic Movement leader - particularly the LF and the Progressive Socialist Party - concerning the distribution of ministerial shares,. “The PM-designate, not Jebran Bassil, is responsible for forming the government and for respecting its size and the distribution of shares,” Saad said. The MP also expressed his objection to the early opening of the presidential battle. “If a person backs a strong term, he would not seek at this stage to inherit (the President politically),” he said in reference to Bassil, who has been accused of hindering the cabinet formation over his aspirations to succeed Aoun after his father-in-law’s six-year term ends in 2022. According to Saad, Hariri can meet the LFs conditions for the cabinet formation. “Our demands pair with the representational size we’ve reached during the parliamentary elections,” he said. The LF insists on joining the next cabinet based on its representational share in the Parliament. “No party can monopolize the Christian representation,” he said in reference to Bassil.
