Yemeni Minister of Local Administration and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Relief Abdul Raqib Fatah strongly condemned Houthi militias for preventing UN and international organizations from delivering relief aid in Hodeidah province’s Durayhimi and Tahita districts. The Minister said in an official statement on Tuesday that militias’ behavior is tantamount to a terrorist act that is considered a violation of humanitarian law and covenants. He also held the militias responsible for the consequences of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the two directorates. Houthis have recently stopped the delivery of international humanitarian and relief aid to Durayhimi and Tahita in an effort to worsen the suffering of civilians and turn them into human shields. In his remarks, Fatah explained that the directorates are in dire need of aid and have witnessed cases of famine due to the suffocating siege imposed by the insurgents. He called on UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen Lise Grande to intervene urgently and take the proper measures to allow access of medical teams to people in Hodeidah areas that are in desperate need of help. He also urged international organizations to issue statements and reports on the role of militias in obstructing relief work in those areas, and to take full responsibility for the silence over the inhumane Houthi actions. The Yemeni Minister called on the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, to condemn the militias’ behavior and hold them responsible for the obstruction of humanitarian aid. He added that remaining silent on Houthi actions are unacceptable and would further encourage the insurgents to put obstacles to the flow of humanitarian aid. On the level of the humanitarian situation, Secretary of Hodeidah province Waleed al-Qadimi discussed on Tuesday with director of the executive unit of the refugee camp management Najib Saadi the role that the unit should play in supporting displaced camps in Hodeidah.
