Griffiths Meets Yemen’s FM Ahead of Geneva Talks

The Yemeni government affirmed its support for the efforts of UN envoy to the country to achieve lasting, comprehensive and sustainable peace. It said that it wants to put an end to the tragedy caused by the Iranian backed coup, stressing the readiness of the Yemeni delegation to go to Geneva consultations next week. Yemen’s Foreign Minister Khaled al-Yamani and Director General of the Presidential Office Dr. Abdullah al-Alimi discussed with the UN envoy Martin Griffiths on Saturday the completion of the ongoing arrangements for the round of political consultations that are scheduled to take place in Geneva on September 6. Yamani said that his government will take advantage of the consultations to make progress in the confidence-building measures, the most important of which is releasing detainees and abductees, lifting the siege on cities, facilitating humanitarian aid access and solving the problem of paying salaries for civil servants in the areas that fall under the militias’ control. Griffiths, for his part, reviewed the procedures and logistical arrangements for the round of talks, He reiterated full commitment to the three references represented by the Gulf Initiative, its executive mechanism, outcomes of the national dialogue and UN Security Council resolutions, especially resolution 2216. He also expressed his appreciation for the Yemeni government for supporting his efforts.
