The Yemeni Coalition for Monitoring Human Rights Violations urged on Monday the United Nations to intervene to end the Iran-backed Houthi militias’ recruitment of children for their war effort. The coalition told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that the majority of reports by UN agencies, such as UNICEF, have confirmed that the number of children recruited by the Houthis amounts to half of the militias’ ranks. The Coalition warned of the physical and psychological scars thousands of children have to endure due to military recruitment. It noted that no serious responses have been put in place in Yemen to prevent this phenomenon, which violates international humanitarian and criminal law. The Coalition said that there are insufficient programs or initiatives to reintegrate child soldiers into society, calling the Human Rights Council to intervene to protect the Yemeni children.
