Turkish diplomatic sources told Asharq Al-Awsat on Monday that Ankara is currently holding talks with Syrian opposition factions and Moscow to implement the content of the Sochi agreement, reached two weeks ago between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “Some opposition factions are against the Russian presence in Idlib. Ankara understands their position,” the sources said, adding that factions of the National Liberation Front (NLF) welcomed the Sochi Agreement and asserted their readiness to begin cooperating with Turkey in this regard. “However, NLF forces do not trust the Russian side,” the sources added. On Sept. 17, Moscow and Ankara signed in Sochi an agreement on setting up a 9-12 mile demilitarized zone in Idlib along the contact line of the armed opposition and the regime forces. In return, Turkish forces and Russian police members would deploy in the zone to complete the withdrawal of factions and the handing over of heavy weapons. According to the agreement, all heavy weaponry operated by rebel groups must be pulled out of the demilitarized zone by October 10 and “terrorist groups” should be removed by October 15. On Monday, the Turkish-backed NLF alliance had officially announced it rejected any Russian presence in the demilitarized zone. Naji Mustafa, spokesman for the NLF wrote in a tweet Monday that a meeting was held with the Turkish ally to discuss elements of the Sochi Agreement and particularly the Russian presence in the isolated zones. He said Turkey promised to avoid the presence of Russian forces. The NLF was formed in August and merged Islamist groups Ahrar al-Sham and Noureddine Zanki with other rebel factions with Turkeys backing. Two days ago, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Faylaq al-Sham group "began pulling out of areas in the southern countryside of Aleppo and the western suburbs of Aleppo city with heavy weapons, including tanks and cannons.”
