The Saudi-led Arab coalition stressed Monday that all members of the alliance support efforts to reach a political solution in Yemen. Coalition spokesman Colonel Turki al-Maliki highlighted the visit paid to Yemen by United Nations special envoy Martin Griffiths and his efforts to hold peace consultations in Sweden next month. The envoy had visited Sanaa and Hodeidah. Maliki also hailed the US State Department for welcoming the upcoming talks. The last round of consultations was held in Geneva in September. They failed after the Iran-backed Houthis did not attend after they made last-minute conditions. Maliki noted coalition’s dismantling of 36 naval mines over the weekend that were planted by the Houthis in the southern Red Sea. Such violations and threats to global shipping routes give the impression that the Houthis were not serious in reaching a political solution despite their claims to the contrary, Maliki told a press conference in Riyadh. On the humanitarian level, he hailed Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for launching the “Imdad” project aimed at meeting the Yemeni people’s humanitarian needs. They donated $500 million, which will be added to their previous contributions as part of the comprehensive humanitarian plan for 2018. Furthermore, Maliki said that the 22 land, air and naval relief routes were operating normally and allowing the entry of necessary goods and relief aid from UN agencies and other international organizations. He stressed that the coalition was still continuing in issuing relief permits that have totaled 34,955.
