Czech President Milos Zeman said he was fascinated by the idea of Israeli President Reuven Rivlin regarding “one state with two nations” solution. During his official visit to Israel, the Czech President said it is impossible to establish an independent Palestinian state in Gaza Strip. Zeman explained that he could not envision an independent state in the Gaza Strip since he perceived Hamas as a terrorist organization. "I was inspired by your idea about one state with two nations, Mr. President, and I know this idea is provocative - any big and deep idea is provocative," Zeman told Rivlin on Monday. President Zeman said the idea of one state with two nations, was provocative but noted that all bold ideas were. He indicated that he expects many people, mainly the journalists, to protest the idea. "So I wonder what will be your argument for this idea. Because for many many decades there is a discussion about two independent states but frankly speaking I do not see independent state in Gaza because I understand Hamas as a terrorist organization and not as a state," Zeman continued. On the second day of his visit, the Czech president began a tour of Jerusalem, which he concluded by attending a meeting with Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and giving a speech in the General Assembly of the Knesset. Zeman asserted the need to express sympathy for Israel because the “betrayal of Israel means betraying ourselves.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also lauded the Czech president for being "one of the first leaders in the world at this time who recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel." Zeman received the “Shield of Jerusalem” award during a ceremony held in the office Edelstein and at the presence of the Prime Minister. Jerusalem Shield award was established last year by the Jerusalem Affairs Ministry to honor people from all over the world who have worked to secure recognition of a united Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Zeman arrived in Israel on Sunday for an official visit, during which he is expected to inaugurate the new Czech House cultural center in Jerusalem alongside Netanyahu.
