Turkish authorities announced on Monday that they had searched a villa in the Yalova region on the Sea of Marmara as part of the investigation into the murder of Saudi citizen Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul on October 2. The officers began searching a two-storey building in Termal district in Yalova with the help of sniffer dogs and drones on Monday morning, and the investigation later widened to the adjacent villa, state news agency Anadolu said. Khashoggi was killed in a rogue operation and Saudi Arabia has since arrested several suspects in the case. Authorities believe that one of the Saudi agents allegedly involved in the murder at the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate called the villa’s owner a day before the killing, the Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office said. After learning this, authorities initiated the search of the Saudi businessmans villas, Anadolu added, but he was not in Turkey during the phone calls with the suspects. The phone call was believed to be about the destruction or disappearance of the body parts, the prosecutor’s office said. The owner of the Yalova property purchased it around three years ago, said Reuters. He has not been in Turkey for some two months. Turkish authorities have so far searched the Saudi consulate where Khashoggi was killed, as well as a forest near Istanbul. The Saudi general prosecution said that its investigations revealed that a team was sent to Istanbul to persuade Khashoggi to return to the Kingdom. It, however, violated its orders and murdered him. Riyadh has repeatedly called on Ankara to present whatever evidence it has in the case, but it has so far not been cooperative.
